Where as Wasaga Beach council declared a climate emergency on May 13, 2021; and Whereas the Wasaga Beach Climate Action Team had made a deputation to council, followed by a meeting with the Mayor and key staff members; and Whereas at said meeting the climate action team was asked to collect data from neighbouring municipalities related to their actions in mitigating and adaptation of environmental concerns, including but not limited to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions; and Whereas the data has been collected and communicated to the Mayor and council and designated town liaison; and Whereas the data clearly identifies that Wasaga Beach is lagging well behind in addressing these serious environmental concerns Vs neighbouring municipalities; and Whereas all levels of government have placed a strong focus on addressing climate change concerns with the Federal level establishing the five mile stones for municipalities, the Provincial level setting out guidelines in regulation 588/17 and Simcoe County having identified best practices for municipalities; Then I motion that an CLIMATE CHANGE Advisory Committee to council be established as soon as possible and further that their top priority is to assist council and staff in the development of a Wasaga Beach Climate Action Plan; and further that an appropriate amount be allocated in the 2023 budget for required consulting fees to ensure the completion of a climate action plan ASAP. Whereas we (continue to) learn more about truth and reconciliation, I believe small steps, such as a Land Acknowledgment at our meetings, will bring a greater awareness to all and is a sign of respect and gratitude towards the indigenous people, the original stewards of this land, we live, work and play on today; And Whereas at our June 29, 2021 council meeting we agreed to learn more about the indigenous history of our area and the challenges faced by the local indigenous community; And Whereas with the 2nd National Truth & Reconciliation day rapidly approaching; Be It Resolved that the Council of the Town of Wasaga Beach introduce a Land Acknowledgement to be read at all Wasaga Beach Council, Committee and Advisory Committee meetings; And Further That the Communications Department assist with appropriate wording to be introduced by September 2022.
